GPS waypoints and routes and Grid References for Round Rotherham
(Initial data sets have been uploaded - to be updated after survey for 2006)
The GPS waypoints make 8 routes, to successive checkpoints.
Also, there may be some changes. If your system allows, subscribe to the GPS data file for notification if there is a change.
The first field in each data line (after the W for Waypoint)
is the 'Idnt' field
The Waypoint Idnt always starts with a numerical
sequence starting at 001 followed by a hyphen and one or more descriptive letters
that indicate the decision. Meaning of letters:
L = left R = right
LR = left then right LL=left and left again
Sharpest turn
AL= Acute Left SL = sharp left
Gentlest turn
FL = fork left BL=bear left
(and of course the same for Right turns)
S = straight on
C = check-point (special symbol: x in circle)
002 is a sequence number, as in 003-S
015-X indicates a point to take care (special GPS symbol: Red Cross cross) as in ALX049
10 figure grid references are given for the GPS system.
The sequential list provides the 'conventional' 6-figure grid references for use in conjunction with OS Landranger Map 111 or Explorer Maps 278 (Sheffield and Barnsley) and 279 (Doncaster).
GPS route file and GPS
waypoint file in Garmin format
using the precise format required
by PCX5 software.
These files are loadable to newer Garmins (that can't
use PCX5), Magellan and other GPS brands using inter
alia GPS Utility,
a shareware product written by Alan
Murphy (contactable via his site).
(There is a restricted freeware version;
a full bells-and-whistles version is available on payment of a fee - it's
cheapest to select payment in dollars!).
The format of the Route file was adjusted for my Garmin GPS12 with PCX5 software. My new GPS12 is incompatible with PCX5 so I now use GPS Utility. Other more conventional format for the title - with spaces or underscores, or a leading hyphen - are ineffective. Load this first, then the waypoint file, as the route file loads the waypoints but without the symbol specification. Or just load the route file to GPS Utility and then use the GPS - Upload All command
Set your GPS for OSGB grid and Ord Survey datum - if the route file works with your GPS, you should only need that - it will give the 164 waypoints in 8 packets of up to 30 waypoints, starting and finishing at a checkpoint. All sections are within the 30 waypoint limit of the GPS12 (with some having been removed from Section 2 because of the changes).
Sequential list of standard 6-figure Grid References for the 164 critical points (generally changes of direction)
